SPEVA LASTING:
a new generation of shoe construction

Traditionally a shoe is lasted in two ways. It may be conventionally lasted where the upper is stitched to a piece of fibreboard. This has advantages in providing a stable platform for the foot, but the cardboard-like board can break down under duress from loading, in-shoe climate and external environmental conditions.

The second method of lasting is called ‘Slip’ lasting, where the upper is stitched to itself like a slipper, producing a very flexible shoe, but has fallen out of favour in running footwear over recent years. asics scientists solved the problem of conventional lasting by introducing EVA as the material to which the upper was stitched.

asics scientists have refined EVA technology to produce SpEVA. SpEVA lasting further enhances comfort by improving cushioning and stability in a shoe specific manner. Different densities of SpEVA are used depending on the precise purpose of the shoe.

In the ‘Neutral/Cushioning’ range the density of SpEVA is 45 degrees and besides offering enhanced cushioning, it is more flexible and so compliments the I.G.S. and shock attenuating properties of the neutral range.

SpEVA 55 degrees density is used in the asics ‘Structured Cushioning’ range and allows the foot to be supported on a stable platform. SpEVA 55 is still soft enough to provide outstanding cushioning, but the increased stiffness boosts the spring rate of the shoe to further improve the already impressive ride.

SpEVA 45 and 55 degrees density offer enhanced dynamic stability, comfort and performance. SpEVA 65 degrees density is designed as a part of our static stability philosophy in the ‘Motion Control’ category of running shoes. SpEVA 65 offers a very stable platform for the heavy runner with or without over pronation problems. The increased stiffness of the lasting limits midsole deformation and enhances the already impressive reputation of asics ‘Motion Control’ range.
