The history of ASICS® began with the establishment of Onitsuka Co, Ltd. in 1949. According to a philosophy based on "bringing up sound youth through sports," the company has kept the tradition of specializing in manufacturing sports shoes by having original ideas and applying epoch-making techniques.
When people recovered from the war and began to realize the enjoyment of sports, Onitsuka's shoes were on their feet. They needed a healthier, more positive lifestyle, a new sense of community, optimism and awareness. The best way to accomplish this he firmly believed, was through sport. So he started making athletic shoes in his living room, and set out to change the future one step at a time. In 1977, the Onitsuka Co. Ltd. became ASICS®.
The name, an acronym, derives from Anima Sana In Corpore Sano. An old Latin phrase expressing the ancient ideal of “A Sound Mind in a Sound Body.” It’s not a tagline, it’s a reason for being. It’s a foundation, a goal, an inspiration. It’s why we began and when we lose sight of it, is when we’ll call it quits.
